“El Velador” means “The Watchman,” inspired by the traditional figure who watched over and protected his community.
El Velador was founded by chefs Veronica and Laszlo Tomaschek, who share a passion for bringing people together through food. After working across Europe, the United States, and Mexico, they created El Velador to share their heritage with the Cleveland community.
Their philosophy is simple: food is comfort, culture and connection. By combining professional culinary training with family traditions, they create authentic Mexican dishes that feel like home.
El Velador offers more than just meals, it offers an experience rooted in culture, care, and the joy of sharing food with others.

Chef Veronica Tomaschek
Veronica Tomaschek was born and raised in Mexico City, where she developed a deep appreciation for culture, family, and food. Growing up in one of the largest cities in the world shaped her into an adventurous and hardworking individual, inspired by her parents and the values they instilled in her.
At just 19 years old, speaking only Spanish, Veronica moved to Switzerland to pursue her passion for hospitality at Glion Hotel School, where she earned a Diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Operations. Determined to succeed, she learned English while completing her studies and adapting to a new culture.
She later graduated from The Culinary Institute of America with a Bachelor’s Degree in Culinary Arts Management and gained experience working in high-end hotels and restaurants, including the Mandarin Oriental in Switzerland and Miami.
Today, Veronica works as a translator, interpreter, and mentor in the Cleveland area. Her journey has allowed her to experience diverse cultures while strengthening her appreciation for her Mexican roots. Through food, she hopes to share the authentic flavors of her upbringing and create meaningful experiences that bring people together.
